Thanks all, 1st Place

Post by davet » Sat Jun 04, 2016 6:48 pm

Thanks all for the help this year. My boy took 1st in the NorthernStar Council race today on 64' Best Track, LED lights and all. Thank you Microbrush for your awesome wheel covers. Average 3.7509 over 6 heats. Good thing we weren't racing Microbrush or Lightninboy's sons because they were much faster and placed 1st in their respective races.

Thanks Whoda!

Putting my boy to bed tonight I asked him what he was thinking when they got to 3rd place and hadn't called his name yet (trophies go to the top 10). He said he thought that maybe there was still a chance but maybe he didn't place. He said when they called his car number then name for 1st Place he almost jumped into the air but tried to stay calm. He said it felt like a dream then he said "Thanks Dad" and put his head down on the pillow. That's the argument for helping a boy build his car.

Great way to end a racing career.

"Best of Show" is just as rewarding as a 1st Place finish. Congratulations. Those trucks look pretty tricky to figure out.

Thanks davet & Maglev!

Been thinking about doing a topic
on all the pinewood derby 18 wheeler truck kits.

Just picked up the Scout Canada
Scouts Express 18 Wheeler kit.
And the Indy Prpducts phantom 500 semi kit.

Hope to have it posted sometime soon.

devet

I just lost my father at the age of 77 before starting the build on the truck.
There were days where I'd just set in my shop and think of how my dad and I never got the chance to build and race pinewood derby cars or trucks.

So if I were to guess on hours it took some were
20 hours.

However I only worked on it for a few hours at a time.
You should see the paint job on it now!
The clear spray is all cracked up kinda looks lighting strikes in the paint job.

Yeah
The rigs are some what tricky to build but fun.

Like Randy I'd like to see the numbers of
Big Rig racers grow for next years MA race.

Sorry to hear about your dad. I have a Chaplain at my work that says you don't really become a man until you bury your dad. Until then your dad is still the anchor of the family. When the anchor is gone your now first really feeling like your on your own.

There's a lot of truth to that devet!
My father is my anchor..
But I guess I'm lucky to be blessed to have a
Step Dad & a Step Mouther as well.

How many hours did you and your son
spend on making the lighting bolt car?

I can tell it must of been around the same due to the thought that went into where to place the lights and in the covering used.

Talk about tricky to get every thing placed just so the car would run out good as well.
That longer track must have been a fun one to race on.

I'd hate to really know how much time is spent. So much is spent going back and fixing or making test fit stuff like covering and testing which clearcoat will work with the ink from our printer. I believe we spent at least 4 hours just cutting the block and sanding it to get it down the weight down. Wiring took about an hour. We used three different batteries with our lights and left them ON for a few days each just to make sure we got the smallest battery we could find but still have at least a full 36 hrs of run time...in case we ever had to check-in the night before the race. All of this is done over the 2 months we have the kit prior to the Pack race.

Wheel prep takes about 30 minutes each because my boy polishes the entire wheel. It looks cooler he says. We ruined a set of wheels during a practice section at the track. After about 30 runs we were reprepping the night before Districts and found the bores of the 3 touching wheels to be all grooved and gouged. The axles we had had burrs. Anyways, you get the picture. Same thing you go through I'm sure. This of course doesn't count the time I spend alone in the kitchen looking at the darn car after everyone is asleep.
