PwdRacing HEAVY Weights

Post by Mr. Slick »

The PwdRacing Heavy Weights made from advanced composites from Tundra(tm) are ready to start rolling down the tracks!

The 1" disks are 3/8" high and weigh 2.5 oz .

The 1.25" disk is 5/16" high and weighs 3.25 oz.

The glue sticks are 1/4" diameter and 4" long and 3 weigh 4.1 oz.

These are NON-TOXIC!

The nice part is that all of them are "workable" with normal tools!
This means that you can sand, drill, carve, and cut the material. They can be cut with a good quality scissors or a Cub Scout pocket knife! This makes the sticks very nice for use in their current form. Drill the holes in the side of the car and slip them in! The sticks do have some air in them that can be removed by melting them.

The 1/4" sticks are used either in their current shape, or they can be melted to any shape with a $5 high-temp mini 20W glue gun from Wal-Mart.

The introductory prices(through the end of BGN in July 09) I have come up with based on my material costs:

Start of update
- - -- - - -- --- -- -- -- - - - - - -
UPDATED with Current Prices!
Type -- Weight -- -- Current Price
Sticks(3) -- 4 oz -- --- $15.95
Round 1" -- 2.5 oz -- --- $12.50
Round 1.25" -- 3.25 oz -- $15.95
Round 1.25" -- 4 oz. ---- $19.95
Round 1.25" -- 4.5 oz. ---- $22.50
Fine adjustment line - 1/4" = .01 oz, $3.95 per oz.

end of update
- - -- - - -- --- -- -- -- - - - - - -
After BGN I will raise the prices to take into account the labor/time to make them. The prices will all be going up roughly $5.

That seems like a pretty interesting material you found. Something formable, dense as lead and non-toxic to boot. I really like the idea of using a hot glue gun to melt them into a weight cavity. It would sure also make last minute weight additions easier. Do you have any pics of this stuff? You selling it on your website?

The idea of "Getting the LEAD out!" is common here in Minnesota, the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The use of LEAD for hunting and fishing has been a problem.

I'll post some photos here on DerbyTalk.

You are correct, the addition of weight is easy - with a High-Temp Mini Glue gun, but what is even easier is the removal of a bit of weight to get it down to the maximum if it is a bit too heavy!

Another common set of questions. . .

Question:
Can I get this stuff and melt it like lead?

Answer:
Sure, but it melts at a MUCH lower temperature. I use the 20Watt High-Temp Mini Glue gun from Wal-Mart.

Question:
I'd like to make a 4 oz. odd shaped slug, but I want it all in one piece.

Answer:
That is what the sticks are all about! I have even used a wood burning tool to shape the different "globs" that I have made during testing.

Question:
If so, which one do I purchase,

Answer:
I would suggest getting TWO set fo the sticks. This will give you some extra material since there is some left over in the glue gun for the first use. . . .

Question:
how do I purchase it,

Answer:
I've put up a quick web page that lets you order them.
http://www.pwdracing.com/heavyweights

Question:
do you take paypal,

Answer:
Yes

Question:
and how soon can I get some to try?

Answer:
I have the small flat rate boxes ready to be used and I have a nice supply of product!

I plan on shipping via Priority Mail so shipping will be $7.50 per order to cover postage and packaging. . . . tha is unless you are getting more then USPS allows in the small flat rate box. ;-) I believe that they have a 70 pound limit for the 48 contiguous states and a 4 pound limit on international shipping.

Are you getting this stuff preformed or are you forming it yourself?

Does this stuff also act like a glue? Will it adhere itself to the wood? If so, I can see an interesting possibility with this stuff. Cut out a very thin car body, drill or cut a weight pocket all the way through the body. Put it on some wax paper (I assume this stuff will not stick to wax paper) and then melt in the weight material to fill the cavity. Sand, paint and race. If this stuff has some adhesion, it seems that it will work better than trying to secure conventional weights in place.

I would use parchment paper rather then wax paper, just to be sure. The High-Temp glue gun says it runs at 193 degrees C which is likely to cause issues with the wax paper.

I just put the car with the hole in it on a flat piece of painted metal(scroll saw surface) and went at it. It slid right off. . I may be lucky though. When making the product, I get the composite and have to form it, I do use a mold release the keep it from sticking to the molds.

I have done some adhesion testing with wood. Drilled a 3/4" hole in a 2x4 and filled just the bottom of the hole. It was very difficult to get the piece out. It was shaped like a cone, nothing on the vertical surface. It had small pices of wood attached to it indicating that it does form a bond with the wood. I don't know that it would adhere to a sealed wood surface. . .

I was in the middle of editing my last post when you answered, so you may not have seen this question.

Well, had to add some more stuff to fit what people are wanting. ;)

I added Adjustment Line to the offering. It is the Tungsten composite in a very thin wire shape that is easily cut. To make the final adjustments even easier .01 ounce is 1/4 inch of the Adjustment Line. A tenth of an ounce is 2 1/2 inches. The line can easily be broken or cut. It is being offered by the ounce.

BTW, I will be out for a couple of weeks so orders will be shipped when I am around.
BSA Summer Camp 6/28 to 7/4
BSA Philmont Trek 7/6 to 7/20
Bluegrass Nationals 7/22 to 7/28

Thanks and have fun! (I know I will be having FUN!)

On the hotglue shaped sticks...these are sold as 3 sticks for $15.95 and it shows 4oz.

Does that mean a total of 4oz, or each stick is 4oz for a total of 12oz?

They are 4 ounces total in the 3 sticks.

They don't have a completely positive review - you need to have a 20Watt mini hot melt glue gun and it takes time. . . .

I am working to see if we can get them reformulated for better flow.

In the mean time we have the regular round rods that are denser then the hot melt sticks.

I haven't noticed a density specification for Tundra(TM). My calculations (based on numbers found on this page) suggest:

Rounds => 8.5 oz/in^3
Sticks => 7.0 oz/in^3

Is this accurate?
