Anyone else having issues accessing the forum? It has been sporadic for me the last couple of days.

I've caught my yearly case of pinewood fever and it is torture when I get an email notification of a post update and I can't read it.

Is that trouble logging in or just getting to the site?

Getting to the site. All morning I kept getting something like site not found message. I was not able to get to grandprix-race-central.com either, but could get to grandprix-software-central.com

Derby Talk and GrandPrix Race Central have been moved to a new server. GrandPrix Software Central is on a separate server.

I have not yet setup server monitoring on that new server. I'll get this setup, so I can get some stats on up time.

I personally have not been having any problems accessing this site. I check it several times a day.

So far, 3 people have reported that problem. One called me and was able to get to the website using the IP address, so the site itself is not down (otherwise, I would not be posting this).

If it happens again, please do the following:
1. Click on the Windows Start button
2. Select Run
3. Enter "cmd" (without the quotes)
4. Click on the OK button
5. Enter "tracert derbytalk.com" (again, without the quotes)
6. Hit the Enter key

See if the trace route indictates where the problem is. Then drop me an email at webmaster@derbytalk.com

Randy ,

I have also had the same problem daily on 2 or 3 different computers ever since the 1969 display episode...

PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED

It's almost to where I cannot hardly wait for 8:30 PM EST to visit the site ...

I only have success with visiting the site from around 8:00 PM EST to about 10:00 PM EST...

I will have to document your instructions and try it tommorrow for it's almost sure to show PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED

and if it shows page cannot be displayed then I will not be able to see the instructions you have described , if it does'nt work I'll send you an e-mail ...

Supposedly this has been fixed, but it can take 24 hours to ripple through the Internet world.

If some of the customers" are having failures, it could be a DNS out-of-whack too. If lookup in DNS fails, that should show up as a failure to translate the URL to the (numeric) IP address, i.e. the line "Tracing route to derbytalk.com [64.20.44.24]" could not show the "[64.20.44.24]" info!

I've had a few occasions where running the command
ipconfig /registerdns
seems to clear up such address translation problems. The cure is not instantaneous ... takes a few seconds (minutes?) for everything to get repaired. I think that this is effective at cleaning up "my end" of the translation, and not for fixing DNS propagation problems.

One site user got an "Unable to resolve target system name derbytalk.com" error when trying that traceroute.

I submitted a ticket to the server management company I use and they indicate this problem has been corrected. They didn't indicate what the root cause was though. According to the domain registrar, it was not a problem on their end, so I assume it was a problem with the nameserver setup.

That "wooosh" sound you here is this entire topic going over my head. :(

I have had some issues with the "page not found" error, I believe on Tuesday and Wednesday, but nothing today.

Bubba

p.s. maybe I'll print this string out and sit down later with a nice warm cup of tea and try to learn something.

Computers and the internet are "all magic", which is as much as most of the user population needs to know to be happy and fulfilled. Some of us just need more to reach that same level of happiness and fulfillment!

So trust your DNS and your DHCP (but not your IRS) and reboot once in a while and all will be well. I try to learn this other stuff cuz I hate to reboot! Once a month is too often. But those monthly M$oft patches seem to demand a reboot. :(
