Wheels and Mold Numbers

Post by Ynot »

I noticed at Maximum Velocity that you can order wheels that come out of a specific mold #, 1 thru 16. Is there an advantage in this? Is there a particular # that has an advantage?

Yes, some wheels are "rounder" and have less runout, some have smaller bores. This thread captures some data we have taken. However, as Sporty notes picking a wheel #8 may increase your odds in getting a better wheel, I doesn't guarantee a better wheel. Some people have made a wheel accuracy gauge to measure actual runout.

Thanks for the links. I assume that which # wheel mold is best is always changing at-least year to year, correct?

Not generally. It's usually when they change the design and make new mold, however, as Sporty points out individual molds do degrade over time.
