BSA Rules in the Box
Can someone post the "rules in the box" from a new BSA car kit? My kids are long out of Cub Scouts, so I don't have ready access to a kit and I wanted to check on something.

Thanks, that confirmed what I was looking for.
"Only dry lubricant is permitted"
I don't recall that "rule" existing beforehand.

IIRC, that rule is not new to the 2010 rule sheet. It was on the 1997 rule sheet, and I believe dates much earlier.gpraceman wrote:I don't recall that "rule" existing beforehand.

Ya I have seen the dry lune often on the rules, when I do look at them.
More than not, many packs and councils have there own rules.
Some packs, do however, use the rules that come in the box.

Re: BSA Rules in the Box
I guess that I overlooked that little "rule" since our district and pack had their own set of rules. This little statement on the "rules in the box" does give race committees the flexibility to set their own rules.
IMPORTANT: The Race Committee should decide on rules and race procedures, then have them printed and distributed to all participants at least two weeks before the race.

Re: BSA Rules in the Box
Here is a fun read under the "Rules in the Box"
Notce that the rules in the box state.
"Only official cub scout Grand prix pinewood derby wheels & axles are permitted". What about the kit block?
Should there be a rule that the kit box must be used ?

Following the same level of rules interpretation, the rule "Only dry lubricant is permitted" would mean that an un-lubricated car is disallowed.whodathunkit wrote:Notce that the rules in the box state. The rules as written do not state that wheels and axles from the kit/box are required; rather, those used must be "official BSA". I might therefore think that this also means that the block need not be from the kit/box.
Is there an "official BSA" block of pine? No BSA kit blocks have identifying marks that make them "official". It is, after all, just a piece of wood!
(When rules do restrict usage to "parts from the box," Darin has noted that the box itself might also count as part of the kit.)

FS, Thank you!
This one struck me as kind of strange as to it's wording.
Mark.

Re: BSA Rules in the Box
Only dry lubricant could be mean several things anyways - at what point does it need to be dry? If you put on oil and wipe it off, is it now dry?
I have seen rules that state dry, powdered lubricant, but with just saying only dry lubricant leaves open some ambiguity.
Our new pack this year simply uses the rules in the box, and although I have asked for clarification on some of the rules, it does not seem that anybody really cars about the derby.

If I did another derby RITB (Rules In The Box) I think I'd go full throttle.
Then help them draft up some reasonable rules and help run the derby.

Maybe for some. However, IMO they insufficient are just should serve a starting point for a good set of rules.slipperyfrog wrote:The way it should be...
