Musing about the history of the hobby

Post by Vitamin K »

So it occurred to me that an interesting resource would be if somebody compiled a history of pinewood derby racing, from the start to the present day, and included the evolution of car and track design, and interviews with notable individuals involved in derby racing.

Just frequenting various boards, I get the feeling that a lot of certain individuals have some "history" with each other. I've got a feeling that there's more to the railrunning/railriding debate than just bent axles. It would be fascinating to learn how all of this came to be.

Heck, maybe it could even be a movie...something akin to how they did the documentary, "The King of Kong."

Anyhow, just my braindump for today.

Far too much drama and people that would argue one way or the other. It might make for a soap opera.

I suggest reading this post which has a wealth of information on the early days of the pinewood derby curated by whodathunkit.

A historywas also compiled by Joe Gargiulo at Pinewood Pro.

A few years ago Maximum Velocity put together a history of BSA kits, which can be found here.

Back then:
Wooden tracks, lead or metal for weights, no graphite lubes, no specialty tools,or parts,
and very little speed tips.

Todays newer technology's:
Longer aluminum tracks, tungsten weights, new oil lubes,
specialty tools geared for building derby cars, specialty car parts.. wheels /axles,
and lots of info to be found on the net about the hobby.
