Micro Wizard "NEW" RTD Is great

Post by Watch-out-for-that-frog »

Micro Wizard has a new version of the Remote Time Display. They went from LCD to LED. I just got ours and WOW what a nice unit! They just changed the picture on their web page to show the LED version. VERY HAPPY with all of their products. ROBUST to say the least.

Glad to hear you liked the remote display. We were looking at the option, also. I had a couple of questions, and I could call MW, but I'm taking the lazy way out. How large are the LEDs and how long a cable comes with it?

3/4 of a inch they are BRIGHT and Show very WELL! The cord L@@KS to be 40' we will never use that much as I have mounted the display on top of our finish line so we have place and time at the end of the track

Had a few days to play with the timer set up and Grand Prix software to really learn the system. Got to say it is a FANTASTIC combo with the software. I want to see if I can make a starter interface for the PC so it is all automatic.

The displays are 3/4". Also it now toggles between position and time displays. We make the cable as long as your track on your order form. Usually that is about 35-40 feet.

Glad you like it.

I wish our "pockets" were as deep as yours Frog :D

I say that because with the GPRM program, all the times are displayed on the computer and onto the projector screen. Maybe you don't run the projector, then having the RTD is a good idea  Even with the projector set-up, it would be nice addition to our race. Maybe next year... :sigh:

 Just a thought, maybe I'll draw a diagram of our race area layout, showing where our computer & projector are in comparison to track layout, where the racers sit at the finish line, pit location, etc. I would enjoy seeing how other races are set-up.

Here's an ASCII-art version of our setup. (You'll need to open your browser window fairly wide to avoid wrapping lines, which messes up the drawing.)

Code: Select all

PIT PIT Seating Seating Seating Seating TBL SC
PIT PIT Seating Seating Seating Seating TBL RE
PIT PIT Seating Seating Seating Seating TBL EN
PIT PIT C TBL
PIT Start Track Track Track Track Finish C TBL TBL TBL
PIT D C
PIT PIT Seating Seating Seating Seating Seating
PIT PIT Seating Seating Seating Seating Seating
PIT PIT Seating Seating Seating Seating Seating
PIT = tables for the pit crew
D = home-brew LED display for our finish gate
C = chairs for the 4 "drivers" whose cars are racing
TBL = tables for the scoring crew

The finish gate displays state with small LEDs (steady = 1st, fast blink and slow blink = 2nd and 3rd), but no one can see that (or remember which blink rate is 2nd and which is 3rd). So we use a home-brew LED display, with 4" seven-segment numbers to show which lane was first, second, and third. The scoring crew can read those from across the room.

Race results are entered by hand into a home-brew scheduling-scoring program, and the display is projected onto a screen behind the scoring crew.

There are three rows of chairs on either side of the track. On either side of the track is a "keep out" zone, a path for the "drivers" to walk in while returning their cars to the pit crew after the race, and floor seating for kids who want to get closer to the action.
