getting error message during adjustment on RaceReplay

I have a Dazzle capture device, and RCA video Signal from a Hitatchi Video Camera.

Race Replay during testing ( hitting the record button then moving my hands in front of the camera ) records the sequence fine.. but when I go to slow the video down to half or quarter ( or really any change in video speed ), it gives me the following popup: "This video does not support changing the video playback speed"... er.... what?

What video compressor are you using in the software? Not all support changing the video playback speed.

I don't actually have the software installed, just the driver

In RaceReplay, go to the Setup Options screen and click on the Advanced button. What video compressor do you have set?

The recommended one for analog video is the "Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V2".

The drop down for "video Compressor Filter" is as follows:

WM Video 8
WM Video 9
MSScreen 9
DV Video Compressor
MJPEG Compressor
CinePak
Intel IYUV
Microsoft BLE
Microsoft Video 1

I doubt that the Pinnacle software will install that codec. The other codec that you can try is ffdshow

so is there a way of testing FPS without having all the software installed?

You can record clips without using a compressor. Where compressors are helpful is to reduce the file size.
