Derby Talk is a forum for Pinewood Derby, Awana Grand Prix, Kub Kar Rally, Shape N Race Derby, Space Derby, Raingutter Regatta and other similar races where a child and an adult work together to create a race vehicle and a lot of fun and memories
The Pro-Hub Tool is a precision machined device that improves the performance of pinewood derby cars by performing three wheel preparation procedures:
Hub Squaring - Ensures accurate rotation by squaring the wheel hub to the wheel bore before mounting the wheel on a wheel mandrel. This is also an easy way to remove the raised ridge present on many of the BSA wheels.
Hub Coning - Reduces the wheel hub to car body braking effect by accurately and easily coning the inside wheel hub.
Bore Reaming - Some wheels are manufactured with a wheel bore that is too small to fit a wheel mandrel. Also, the wheel bores are not always consistent between wheels. The Pro-Hub Tool reams undersized wheel bores minimizes the variance in bore sizes.
The tool has been successfully tested on wheels from BSA, Awana, and PineCar kits. It is shipped complete with coarse and fine grit sandpaper (220 and 600 grit), and instructions.
We have also used the Pro-Hub Tool to sort through wheels and pull out those that are out-of-round. Since you already have the wheel on the Pro-Hub Tool from the Reaming operation; just give it a spin and watch the edge of the tread. If there is appears to be excessive up and down movement that is not due to flash, mold marks and such, kick the wheel in the can and use another.
Love your products!
I purchased a pro hub tool. Can you tell me if this should this be used on the "new" BSA wheels and if so should I just follow the same directions as the old wheels?
Thanks!
The new wheels have a beveled hub, so it isn't necessary to use the Pro-Hub tool on the inner hub. However, the Pro-Hub Tool is required if you plan to work on the outer hub with the Pro-Outer Hub Shaver, or true the tread surface with the Pro-Wheel Shaver XT.
