New Timer Model from NewBold Products

DerbyStick from NewBold Products

We have started shipping a new low-cost and ultra compact timer called DerbyStick. This timer is about the same size as a standard USB "thumb" drive or memory stick and is powered by the USB port on your computer.

We have taken the same hardware design used in our Turbo and Turbo Lite products and applied the lastest in manufacturing processes to dramatically reduce the size and cost. To support this design we have invested in our own in-house surface mount assembly equipment required to build using the extremely small, fine-pitch components of this type design.

The unit is compatible with GrandPrix Race Manager, DerbyMaster, and Racetender software and ships with a CD with all documentation, USB drivers, and the Hyperterminal application (for those not using race software).

We have noticed over the years that when we go to races where race software and projectors are used, the audience watches the projected results much more than the over-track display. So why spend so much for a Turbo system? The finish order and times going to the PC is the most important part of the system!

Nice concept.

I assume that is intended to be used with sensors that require an incandescent light source, not sensor and emitter pairs, correct? There are still many that use an old parallel port sensor system and it would be good if they can adapt their sensors and emitter pairs to your timer. That would allow them to use newer computers and gives them better options of race management software.

Thanks Randy.

Our DerbyStick uses the same IR sensors as on our Turbo Lite product. We recommend illuminating with a standard incandescent source because it's either something that most groups already have or can purchase for a very low cost. Spring loaded desk lamps are quite nice because they adjust easily and normally have a clamp mount on the base which is nice for mounting to the side of the track.

Incandescent bulbs put out a fairly wide range of wavelengths. The sensors we use, like most IR phototransistors, have a fairly wide response range and could be illuminated with other sources. If the parallel port timers you refer to are already using IR emitters then it's quite possible that those could be used to illuminate our sensors or possibly use both the emitter and detector pair.

Without looking at the specific part numbers involved and the design of the parallel port timer I couldn't say whether that would be any better or easier than just using the sensors that ship with the DerbyStick and putting a 60W incandescent light 2-3 feet above the track.

Here's one such system, the self proclaimed World's Least Expensive Pinewood Derby Timer.
