What music have you used before the race?
What music have you used before the race?
I am helping to run our Pack race in a few weeks.
I will be in charge of the laptop, timer and projector.
I would like to place some music before the race to get everyone ready for it. Has anyone heard some appropriate music before the race?
I am thinking of a a few songs from the "Cars" soundtrack.
"Real Gone" and "Route 66". Anyone who has seen the movie "Cars" will get it, but I am not sure of everyone else?
Thanks

Hot Rod Heart - John Fogerty
Danger Zone - Kenny Loggins
Abunch of stuff from C.W. McCall

"I can't drive 55" - Sammy Hagar
Re: What music have you used before the race?
I forgot "Life is a Highway" from the Cars soundtrack as well.
Some guys at work added these.
Greased Lightnin' - from Grease, but we would need the G rated version.
Mustang Sally - Wilson Pickett
Leader of the Pack - but that is not a happy song
Little Duece Coupe - The Beach Boys
Little GTO - Ronnie and the Daytonas
409 - The Beach Boys

Re: What music have you used before the race?
I was thinking something more along these lines:
On the Road Again - Willie Nelson
East Bound and Down - Jerry Reed
Drive - Alan Jackson
etc.
Not sure how the Beach Boys or Jan and Dean would go over in your neck of the woods.
I think the music depends on which group you are trying to "entertain". If it's mainly the boys, I would go with some of the music from the movie Cars. If it's the parents, I would go with the list above.
I would throw in Sammy Hagar's "I can't drive 55" for good measure.

You are correct about the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean. They are before the parents time.
The music from Cars will have been heard by the boys and the parents. I know my wife and I have heard them a million times.
I really like Greased Lightnin, but I have to be careful of the language.

Goodness, perhaps I am older than I thought. The Beach Boys did have that little "resurgence" when the movie Cocktail came out. But that was probably longer ago than I think it was also.tmbnorm wrote:You are correct about the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean. They are before the parents time.
I can relate to that. Our youngest would (and sometimes does when Mom allows) watch it every day if he could.tmbnorm wrote:The music from Cars will have been heard by the boys and the parents. I know my wife and I have heard them a million times.
I "screened" the movie Grease a couple months back thinking I would let my older daughter watch it (she loves dance and musicals). Ouch, a lot of stuff I have forgotten about in there.tmbnorm wrote:I really like Greased Lightnin, but I have to be careful of the language.

the lyrics to Greased Lightnin are not good for a Cub Scout event.
Don't think I want that broadcast at the race.

Re: What music have you used before the race?
Agreed.
Don't know if a sanitized version was published (I would think so given the radio standards at the time), but the unsanitized one is not appropriate.
A soundtrack may or may not have a version that is acceptable, I simply don't know the answer to that question.

Here are some thoughts. Some are repeats
"Dead Man's Curve" by Jan and Dean
"409" by The Beach Boys
"Little Deuce Coupe" by The Beach Boys
"Shut Down" by The Beach Boys
"The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" by Jan and Dean
"GTO" by Ronny and the Daytonas
"Hey Little Cobra" by The Rip Chords

Might give you an excuse to squeeze in Johnny B Good by Chuck Berry also, as in "Go, Go, Go Johnny Go", esp. if you have any kids named Johnny (what pack would be complete without one)?DerbyAddict wrote:How about

Re: What music have you used before the race?
I was able to get the "singles" version of "Greased Lightnin'"
Instead of being rated PG-13 like the original, it is now rated PG.
The bad words are gone, but there is some innuendo.
I did get "Highway Patrol" by Junior Brown. I will play that one after "I can't drive 55".

Re: What music have you used before the race?
We do a mock radio show 1/2 hour before the race (Radio RACE). If you want to listen to a sample of what we do, Right-Click on the Radio RACE microphone on the bottom left corner of our home page for a sample. In coming weeks I will make a link to additional recordings. We use a playlist of several hundred songs for variety. We play lower-key songs prior to the race and switch to Up-tempo stuff all during the race. I started out with all racing or car-related songs, but quickly expanded beyond that, just to keep the show more interesting for the Old guys since we will run 20-25 derbies a year. If anyone wants my playlists, I can email them or post them here. They would be text files.

Have you checked the lyrics to "I can't drive 55"? Something about "I'll throw your @#&^ in the city joint" might .tmbnorm wrote:I was able to get the "singles" version of "Greased Lightnin'"
