Race kerchiefs

Post by Randy and Son »

A while back, someone here on DT had the idea to make race kerchiefs and car shaped slides to go with them. This year I had my den of second year Webelos make enough of them for the whole pack to wear during the Derby.

I wish I could give proper credit to the pinehead that had the idea to make race kerchiefs and car slides for PWD. "Thank you."

Here are some pictures of the racekerchiefs and slides we made this year.

Here is a picture of the materials used.

If anyone is interested, the car body is a 7/8 inch wide piece of pre-primed door casing, the wheels are sliced from a piece of 3/4 inch dowel. (Paint the dowel before slicing, then slice and attach the wheels to a piece of duct tape, paint them, put another piece of tape over them, then flip and remove the first piece and paint the remaining side.) Part of a craft stick is glued to the bottom and half of a pipe cleaner is inserted and wrapped around the race kerchief to hold it in place. Paint was brush-on acrylic.

Everyone liked them. After the pledge of allegiance, the "racers" were asked to report to an area away from the parents where they were outfitted with the race kerchiefs. Then on the way back in the parents had been coached to give them a boisterous welcome back. Parents were surprised to see the change in wardrobe and the boys were excited to be greeted so well.

Very cool. They almost make me wish CSB uniforms had neckerchiefs... :-)

Now, why can't they? ... at least for race day.

I have been considering adding some black and white checkered neckerchiefs for next season. I can see these being a fun thing for the boys or even just for the race crew.
