AWANA Grand Prix 2022
The AWANA kits have arrived.
Sign ups have started.
Inspiration has struck.
Sketches have begun.
And I think I have my design ready to go to reality.
The Inspiration
The Idea
I did tinker with a WW2 shark mouth idea but I’m scrapping it for a open model engine design with some fat exhausts.
The bottom under the cab will be hollowed out and have tungsten installed to achieve 1” COG. A thin piece of Balsa will cover the weight compartment.
The cab roof and back will be made from balsa and the windscreen will be some limo dark tint.
I will keep you posted.

Looks like it will be a cool design.

Awesome! I have made many rod designs when I raced in the Hot Rod Division. My best looking cars were hindered by aerodynamics. I had to set my drift very strong into the center guide of the track.

Alrighty. First update. Base of the car is cut and laid out. Have some more cuts to make in The front. The box bed and the cab are roughed out and cut. Put an engine together from a model. Plan to have the oil sump inset into the frame and the trans will go inside the cab.
Re: AWANA Grand Prix 2022
OMG, you have some work in that beauty! I cannot wait to see the final outcome! Awesome work! There is a machinist in PA who used to race pros, who was really good at making awesome hot rods. He got frustrated and quit after some of the new guys came in and set new standards. However, nobody could match his quality of build. Your build is right with his.

Update 2.
Cab and bed design are complete. Coating seams with 1/32 balsa. Still need to cut out and ladder the base of the car for tungsten placement.
First pit day is Saturday with the clubbers. I’m so excited!

The Inspiration
In the image seen for your Inspiration ..
The car is sporting a sun visor.. The round holes seen in the sun visor are also know as/or called speed holes in the Hot Rod world.
Hay I'm just cheering you and your build on It's cool ! Just thought that you might be adding the speed hole sun visor to your build as well .

Re: AWANA Grand Prix 2022
Okay mclewis_13 Talk about a photo showing speed holes and Inspiration!
Your open box build style is much in the same to the box style building I like to do as well.. maybe you'll see the box build similarities in the pic's.
Some time after I first started out here on DT .
I wanted to see if I could build one of my favorite Ford trucks the 1929 model A .. The Avatar truck that's seen just above my user name.
I also wanted to keep the Muscle Machines toy look to the Avatar build as well. ( Funny how I'm looking back threw all my older build photos now.
And to have run across the Muscle Machines truck build .. Take a look at what you'll see on its sun visor.

You just don't see many builders putting this much detail into there builds any more.
I know you went with a plastic model motor for your build nothing wrong with that at all.
Best I can recall on the Avatar truck build I chose to build that big block blown motor all out of pinewood also..
well as it turned out it was a lot of wood weight up front for racing.
But I enjoyed making it and putting as much detail into this build as I could as well.

Can't wait to see the rest of your build.

Holy Cow Whoda. My kids and wife are going Gaga over it.
When I told them the engine was pine too I think one of them fainted.
You have set the bar really high. But now I’ve see proof that it can be achieved.

(So did the kids when I raced it !)

( Are you kidding!.. I would of fainted if I could of pulled off making all the internal working's to the pine motor .)

(Just trying to pass a little more Inspiration you're way!)
