wood burning cars.

Post by whodathunkit »

Here is a video that I just ran across on wood burning pinewood derby cars with a propane torch.

While searching for Pyrography (wood burning) for adding details in pinewood derby cars.. that id like to share !

While I like the idea and the looks of burnt wood derby cars with the wood grain darkened.

In the video above you will see the dad is burning the cars with a propane torch on a concrete floor with his son's.
Okay I'm not knocking on this video in any way.. okay so maybe I'm just a little concerned on safety however!

As a Welder by trade..
I just want to point out that this is not a very safe way to go about burning wood with a hot propane torch on a concrete floor .
Because a hot torch flame on concrete can cause the concrete to pop and crack and the fragment's to fly any which way.
Stay safe and put on some PPE & safety glasses .. and use a metal plate under your car while lightly toasting it with a propane torch on a concrete floor.

Check this video out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtmtFLVMeRw
What type of automobile can be spelled the same forwards & backwards?

That is a nice effect. There's a YouTube channel that I follow called "Wild Wonderful Off-Grid" where a family shows how they're building their off-grid home (among other things). They used this process (called Shou Sugi Ban) on the siding of their A-frame home, as well as other places.

(They don't use a torch on concrete though...)

Well Darin,
when I was talking about pyrography wood burning...
I was thinking of the woodburning pencils like what's seen in the image below for adding details to the Derby car's and trucks.
Image
Details like louvers.. hood / trunk / grill, out lines something along the lines of like what i did for the door detail on the convoy truck build way back when.

And even some pyrography woodburning art work's on the derby cars... that you just don't see kids or adults doing to add details to there derby cars.
Maybe something along the art work seen in this pyrography wood burning video.
