Radial wheel run-out is essentially bumps. If you rotate the wheel on a perfect axis (gage pin, mandrel, etc) with a dial indicator rubbing against the tread surface, a perfect wheel would exhibit ZERO run-out. However this never happens. Some wheel molds are very bad. But even the good ones aren't perfect. All wheel have a little bump where the mold release vent is located. But even after sanding that bump off you can still measure the radial tread error.

There is a thread here that shows the same setup we use to measure this error. Let me find it & post a link.

This is exactly what we've been trying to correct & measure.

More good news! When Stephen came home from school & finished his homework, we headed out to the garage. After all the practice over the weekend, he skillfully chucked the mandrel, mounted the wheel & started sanding. We use the following grades held against a straight vertical edge: 220, 320, 400, 600, 1000, 2000, 3200, 3600, 4000, 6000 & 8000. (Axles got treated all the way to 12,000)

Back to the dial indicator & the 2 best wheels exhibit no detectable run-out at all. The third has just the slightest evidence of the mold release mark & if the dial indicator tip touches it, it is detected. However on the flats on either side of the mark no dial movement is detected.

The fourth wheel will be from a previous set that are .015" smaller in diameter. This will be installed on the raised corner so is of no matter.

Thank you Derby Worx & everyone here at Derby Talk. We believe this will be the best set of wheels Stephen has ever raced with.

12 more days for the Pack Derby!
