What to use to clean wooden track

Post by psycaz »

Can someone recommend what they have found to work to clean a finished wooden track with?

I don't want to do any damage to the finish/surface, but get the graphite off.

Thanks

I use a damp towel, followed by a dry wipe down. It works well IF the track has not been neglected with excess amount of graphite build up.

Anything special to dampen the towel besides just water?

I've found that denatured alcohol has gotten the graphite off the desk we use to build cars quite nicely, but am hesitant to use it on the track.

The track is new this year.

I would think that a good general purpose cleaner would work. Just make sure it contains no bleach. You can try the cleaner on a small spot (on the side or under the track, if also finished) as a test to see if it will have a problem with the track's finish.

Just water. Denatured alcohol will remove the graphite, just not sure how it would react with finish. So I err on the side of caution.

You may want to try a citrus cleaner, I usually have good luck with that on my track. Windex, Johnson & Johnson, and several other companies make these types of products.

How'd it work?

We just picked up our Pack track (I'm the new Pinewood Derby Chairman) and ours could definitely use a little cleaning. Not sure the last time anybody did anything other than wipe it down with a dry rag (if that).

p.s. It's a Piantedosi.

It seemed to work out great. No residue that I could tell and picked up a ton of graphite I thought I had gotten off.

Do you recall the particular brand / variety you used?

Given that it's not my property, I'd rather keep my "experimenting" to a minimum
