soap box derby
Has anyone participated in the all american soap box derby ?
I am thinking about buying the kit, $430.00 not inlcuding shipping or entry fee and membership to all american soap box derby.
There is a annual race about 2 hours away from us.
Since my son likes cub mobile racing so much. I am seriously pondering the idea to get the kit and have him race in it.

Re: soap box derby
Yes I have done it.
One car has lasted several years. 4 grandkids have used it so far.
Most of the cars have corporate sponsors because our race costs $75
yr to enter.
There are differnt kits for differnt size kids. It is pretty expensive for individuals. I know of one parent who didnt have a corporate sponsor.
Its not hard to find one if you have one local.
The more serious racers race more than 1 time a year in order to earn points in order to go to Akron.

I have been looking for a sponsor.
Our Town does not offer a local event, Tho I have called and suggested one in recent weeks.
However, kiwanis hosts the one in McHenry Il.Is where he is able to race at, Per the rules.
So I have time yet to find a sponsor, Or try and save some up.
$430 for the car
$90 for the wheels
Shipping im guessing, $90
Entry fee appears to be around $75.
And I believe weights still are needed.
But I know My son wants to try it. I was at first thinking of a used car. However In reading the rules.
Yikes, Seems the older ones are not the same as the new ones. And I am not sure there is a grand father rule in place.
How does the older soapbox derby you have, work, run compare to the newer ones ?

Re: soap box derby
The winner of each division goes to Akron. Other kids earn points by racing in several races which means traveling to differnt towns. If they earn enough points they can go to Akron.
I understand that the cars that make it to Akron can earn a special award
When they arrive at Akron the cars are inspected. Those that are put together perfectly at inspection get some kind of award.
Our race -there is a lot of effort put in to making sure every car is right
before the race so that if they go to Akron they will at least eanr that award
Our race is double elmination so that each kid races at least twice.
These races are very close. They have a electronic starts and finishes.
Which is the only way
Yep weights are still needed .
Yep they have differnt class cars
1 for smaller kids
1 for bigger kids
1 for masters ( custom cars )
1 for handicap kids
Yep its expensive

Also Sporty
Our car may be 10 years old but its the same as what you'll buy this year.
We have only bought new brake pads which our race requires new ones each year

I have been calling and cotnacting local biz.
Trying to find a sponsor, I may have one. Waiting to here back.
Seeing how so easily you can run into spending well over $800 on them.

Re: soap box derby
I ordered and recieved the stock kit this past weekend.
I was a bit surprised to see how narrow this unit is.
Im wondering if my child will fit into it.
Then I was not sure if I should start assembly now or wait.
I dont have the weights or wheels yet.
Do the weights have to go on, before the body goes on ? or does it matter ?
Didnt know if it is easy to take the shell on and off or recommended .
